The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a

* Flash Flood Warning for...
Somerset County in southeastern Maryland...

* until 230 am EDT

* at 1137 PM EDT... local law enforcement officials reported
thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Doppler
radar indicates rainfall amounts of 3 to 4... with local amounts up
to 5 inches have fallen. Flash flooding is expected to begin
shortly.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include...
Pocomoke City... Princess Anne... University of Maryland Eastern
Shore... Lawsonia... west Pocomoke... Westover... Marion Station...
Whitehaven... Upper Fairmount... Dames Quarter... Rehobeth...
Byrdtown... Oriole... Mount Vernon... Champ... Monie... Eden...
Widgeon... Fairmount and Kingston.

Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the
warned area.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small
creeks and streams... country roads... farmland... and other low lying
spots.

The Flash Flood Watch is now in effect for

* portions of the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland and Virginia...
including the following areas... in the lower Eastern Shore of
Maryland... Dorchester... Somerset and Wicomico. In Virginia...
eastern Essex... eastern King William... eastern King And
Queen... Lancaster... Middlesex... New Kent... Northumberland...
Richmond... western Essex... western King William... western King
And Queen and Westmoreland.

* Through late Thursday night

* locally heavy rainfall from showers and thunderstorms will
persist across the region overnight and continue through
Thursday night. Total rainfall amounts are expected to range
from 2 to 6 inches with locally higher amounts possible.
Excessive runoff from heavy rain increases the potential for
flooding across the area especially in low lying and poor
drainage areas.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead
to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

You should monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action
should flash flood warnings be issued.

... A line of strong thunderstorms will affect southwestern
Worcester... southeastern Somerset and north central Accomack
counties...

At 1226 am EDT... radar indicated strong thunderstorms were located
along a line extending from Marion Station to 8 miles north of
Parksley to near Onancock. Movement was northeast at 10 mph.

Wind gusts in excess of 40 mph and pea size hail are possible with
these storms.
. in addition... Rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible with
these storms.

These storms will be near...
Marion Station around 1235 am EDT.
Westover around 110 am EDT.
Pocomoke City and west Pocomoke around 115 am EDT.

Other locations impacted by these storms include Saxis... Shelltown...
Sanford... Beaver Dam... Guilford... Mappsville... Rehobeth...
Temperanceville... Bloxom and Nelsonia.

Strong wind gusts are possible with these storms. These wind gusts
are capable of knocking down tree limbs... small or weakened trees...
and blowing around trash cans... potted plants... lawn furniture and
other light outdoor objects.

Motorists should use extra caution in the vicinity of these storms.
Be prepared for rapid changes in weather and Road conditions. Heavy
rain could cause ponding of water on roads... and possible minor
flooding of ditches and poor drainage areas.

Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm.
Lightning can strike more than 10 miles away from a thunderstorm.
Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.
