The National Weather Service in Caribou Maine has issued a

the Aroostook River below Masardis.

* At 7:00 am this morning, the stage was 17.7 feet.
* Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast.
* Flood stage is 17.0 feet.
* Forecast... the river will continue to fall to below flood stage by
early tomorrow.

611 am EDT Wed Apr 16 2014

... The Flood Warning remains in effect until 300 PM EDT Wednesday for
urban areas and small streams in Aroostook County...

**a Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or has been
reported. All interested parties should take necessary precautions
immediately.**

Flooding continues in portions of the County this morning. Latest
reports are that the Egypt Road from Presque Isle into Easton was
closed due to high water. Route 164 near the Washburn and Presque
Isle line was flooded. These reports are in addition to the numerous
reports of impacted roads last evening.

Ice movement and jams continue on the Aroostook River. Ice had moved
out of Washburn with water levels receding, but ice has now jammed
up near the Masardis gage with water backing up behind the jam and
rising. The latest stage at Masardis was 17.50 feet and flood stage
is 17 feet.

Another ice jam resides at Route 1a bridge in Fort Fairfield. Water
was backing up behind this jam as well and rising. The colder
temperatures will slow things up today into tonight but the ice jams
will most likely settle in place.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into
areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually
deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful
enough to sweep vehicles off the Road. When encountering flooded
roads make the smart choice... turn around... dont drown.

Areal Flood Watch

Statement as of 4:46 AM EDT on April 16, 2014

Expires 8:00 PM EDT on April 16, 2014

... Flood Watch remains in effect through this evening...

The Flood Watch continues for

* portions of east central Maine... north central Maine...
northern Maine... southeast Maine and west central Maine...
including the following areas... in east central Maine...
central Penobscot... northern Penobscot and southern Penobscot.
In north central Maine... central Piscataquis... northern
Piscataquis and southern Piscataquis. In northern Maine...
northeast Aroostook... Northwest Aroostook and southeast
Aroostook. In southeast Maine... central Washington... coastal
Hancock... coastal Washington... interior Hancock and northern
Washington. In west central Maine... northern Somerset.

* Through this evening

* reports of flooded roads continue as the mild temperatures and
heavy rainfall on Wednesday lead to rapid snowmelt with some
roads being closed and culverts being damaged.

* Ice had broken up and was moving on the rivers especially the
Saint John, Aroostook and Piscataquis rivers. An ice jam remains
on the Aroostook River at Fort Fairfield. All streams and rivers
continue rise steadily including the Mattawamkeag and Penobscot
rivers. Colder temperatures expected today into tonight will
slow the rising waters.

* Flooding can rapidly develop in the vicinity of ice jams.
Those with interests along rivers and streams should remain
alert for ice jams and possible flooding.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.
