Flash Flood Watch, Areal Flood Advisory

Statement as of 10:24 AM MDT on July 29, 2014

Expires 3:30 PM EDT on July 29, 2014

... Flash Flood Watch remains in effect until 9 PM MDT this evening...

The Flash Flood Watch continues for

* a portion of north and central New Mexico... including the
following areas... Central Highlands... De Baca County... east
slopes Sangre de Cristo Mountains... eastern Lincoln County...
eastern San Miguel County... far northeast Highlands... Guadalupe
County... Harding County... Jemez Mountains... northeast Highlands...
northern Sangre de Cristo Mountains above 9500 feet/Red River...
Quay County... Raton ridge/Johnson Mesa... San Juan Mountains...
south central mountains... southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains
above 9500 feet... Union County... upper Rio Grande Valley and west
slopes Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

* Until 9 PM MDT this evening

* an upper level disturbance will slowly move eastward across
central and northern New Mexico triggering showers and
thunderstorms over much of the area. Weak steering flow aloft
combined with a very moist airmass in place... will result in slow
moving thunderstorms that will be capable of producing very heavy
rain and flash flooding.

* Locations where the ground is already saturated from recent
rainfall will be favored for flash flooding. Other vulnerable
locations will include steep terrain... urban areas and burn
scars. Keep a watchful eye on arroyos and small streams... and
stay out of flooded low water crossings. Monitor the latest
forecasts closely and be prepared to take immediate action if a
warning or advisory is issued.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Flash Flood Watch means that conditions may develop that lead to
flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
Monitor later forecasts and be prepared to take action should flash
flood warnings be issued.

934 am MDT Tue Jul 29 2014

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued an

* Arroyo and Small Stream Flood Advisory for...
southeastern Lincoln County in central New Mexico
Curry County in east central New Mexico
De Baca County in east central New Mexico
eastern Guadalupe County in east central New Mexico
Quay County in east central New Mexico
Roosevelt County in east central New Mexico
extreme southeastern Harding County in northeast New Mexico
southeastern San Miguel County in northeast New Mexico
Chaves County in southeast New Mexico

* until 130 PM MDT

* at 929 am MDT... National Weather Service Doppler radar indicated
an area of moderate rain with embedded thunder moving east across
the east central and southeast plains of New Mexico. Rainfall
amounts will range from one tenth to one half inch... although
spotty higher amounts near one inch are possible across portions
of Curry and Roosevelt counties. Much of this rain will fall on
grounds already saturated from thunderstorms last night. Several
roads are already impassable and many more will become inundated
with water between Roswell... Fort Sumner... Santa Rosa... Tucumcari
and Clovis.

* Strong flows and high water levels are expected in arroyos... small
streams and over low water crossings.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Do not drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the
roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross
safely.
