Friday night through Saturday, then taper off late Saturday
evening.

* Winds... north 25 to 35 mph with gusts to around 45 mph

Special Statement

Statement as of 4:28 AM MDT on April 27, 2017

Expires 6:00 PM EDT on April 27, 2017

... Significant late season winter storm to hit northern and
central New Mexico late Friday through early Sunday...

An unseasonably cold upper level low pressure system and
associated cold front will bring much colder temperatures to
northern and central New Mexico this weekend, along with rain
showers, thunderstorms, snow and strong and gusty winds.

Friday will start out with relatively high snow levels, so
any accumulating snow will be relegated to the higher terrain of
the north and west. Strong and gusty west winds may Rake portions
of the south as well. As colder air spreads in from the
northwest Friday night, snow will increase in coverage and
intensity over the western and northern mountains.

The focus for significant accumulating snow will shift to the
Sangre de Cristo Mountains and northeast New Mexico Saturday as a
vigorous cold front is forecast to plunge into the region, turning
any rain rapidly to snow. Northerly wind gusts to 45 mph will
create areas of reduced visibilities in blowing and drifting snow.

Some major travel corridors will be impacted by accumulating
snow and blowing snow, especially Interstate 25 between Glorieta
Pass and Raton Pass, highways 64 and 87 from Raton to Clayton and
possibly Interstate 40 between Tijeras Canyon and Santa Rosa.

After high temperatures Saturday ranging from 20 to 35 degrees
below average, a late season freeze is forecast Saturday night
into Sunday morning for much of northern and central New Mexico. A
number of lower elevation locales may even experience a hard
freeze, which could damage or kill tender vegetation.

Monitor NOAA Weather Radio, weather.Gov/abq or your local media
for the latest updates on this evolving winter storm.
