Heat Advisory

Statement as of 5:23 AM CDT on August 23, 2014

Expires 10:00 PM EDT on August 23, 2014

... Heat advisory in effect from noon today to 9 PM CDT this
evening...

* timing... mainly this afternoon.

* Temperature... will range between 93 to 96 degrees. High humidity
will produce heat index values 100 to 105 degrees... especially
between 1 PM CDT and 7 PM CDT.

* Impacts... hot and humid conditions will raise the risk of heat
related illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitted clothing when possible
and drink plenty of water.

To reduce the risk during outdoor work the occupational safety
and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest
breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome
by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat
stroke is a emergency - call 911.

Special Statement

Statement as of 2:35 PM CDT on August 22, 2014

Expires 8:00 PM EDT on August 23, 2014

... Afternoon heat index values across locations generally west of
the Cumberland Plateau region are expected to reach between 100
to 105 degrees this weekend through Monday...

A strong upper level ridge will continue to generally be in place
across middle Tennessee through this weekend into early next week.
This will continue to allow afternoon high temperatures to be in
the mid to upper 90s across middle Tennessee... but with factoring
in the expected moisture content of the atmosphere during these
afternoon hours... commonly known as relative humidity... to the
actual air temperatures... it will feel like temperatures are
between 100 to 105 degrees during these afternoon hours. It is
also important to remember that exposure to full sunshine can
increase the heat index value by 15 degrees.

This strong upper level ridging is expected to slowly shift westward
through Monday also. This will allow for isolated to scattered
showers and thunderstorms to develop across the mid state during
these peak heating afternoon hours also. Though providing a potential
quick relief from the heat... thunderstorms that do develop will
potentially be strong... with brief heavy rainfall and frequent
cloud to ground lightning strikes the main concerns.

There are multiple outdoor events this weekend and into early next week
across the mid state... and event organizers... participants... spectators...
and visitors should take the proper safety precautions to protect
yourself from the heat... as well as anyone being outside. Slow down...
wear light colored clothing and drink plenty of water or other non
alcoholic caffeine free beverages. Eat smaller meals and eat more
often. You can use a small battery based or electric fan also...
although it will not cool the air outside... fans do help evaporate
sweat... which cools the body. Check on the elderly... disabled... children
playing outside... homeless... and it is also very important to
remember to not leave small children or pets unattended inside a
vehicle for any length of time... as vehicles can warm up very
quickly in a matter of just a few minutes causing life threatening
conditions.
