Areal Flood Warning

The National Weather Service in Riverton has issued a

* Flood Warning for...
rain and snowmelt in...
central Fremont County in central Wyoming...

* until 900 PM MDT Monday

* scattered rain showers are forecasted across the upper Wind River
basin Sunday afternoon through Monday morning. One half inch of
rain with local amounts of up one inch in thunderstorms is
expected. The combination of snowmelt and rainfall runoff will
cause significant rises along the Wind River through Monday night.
Widespread flooding of low lying areas along the Wind River is
likely through Monday night.

* At 9 am, the Wind River near DuBois crested near 5.1 feet early
Sunday morning. Minor flood stage is at 5.0 feet. The river is
expected to rise to 5.4 - 5.5 feet by Monday morning. Low land
flooding intensifies and becomes more widespread in and around
DuBois at river levels near 5.5 feet.

* At 9 am, the Wind River at Riverton is receding after cresting
near 9.3 feet late Saturday night. Minor flood stage is at 9.0
feet. The river is expected to rise to 9.4 to 9.5 feet late Sunday
night. The river is then forecasted to rise to 10.3 to 10.5 feet by
Monday night. At 10.0 feet, there is extensive agricultural
flooding downstream of Riverton near the black bridge and Hidden
Valley area.


Precautionary/preparedness actions...

Keep a safe distance from the raging waters of the Wind River.
River banks can suddenly become unstable and quickly wash away.

A Flood Warning means that flooding along the Wind River is imminent
or occurring.

Areal Flood Watch

The Flood Watch continues for

* portions of central Wyoming, north central Wyoming, and
northwest Wyoming, including the following areas, in central
Wyoming, upper Wind River basin, Wind River basin, and Wind
River mountains east. In north central Wyoming, Bighorn
Mountains southeast, Bighorn Mountains west, and southeast Big
Horn basin. In northwest Wyoming, Absaroka Mountains, Cody
foothills, north Big Horn basin, and Teton and Gros ventre
mountains.

* Through Monday afternoon

* widespread mountain rain showers with locally heavy rain
Sunday afternoon through early Monday morning will cause
additional significant increases in creek and river levels.
Many basins will receive up to one half to one inch of rain
this afternoon through early Monday morning, locally up to two
inches with thunderstorms.

* Several tributary creeks and streams that flow into the Big
Horn and Powder River have the greatest potential for moderate
flooding. Medicine Lodge creek, Ten Sleep Creek, Rock creek,
and Clear Creek are expected to flow at very high levels by
early Monday morning. The Wind River and the north/south Forks
of the Shoshone river will flow at very high levels for
widespread flooding of low lying areas.

A Flood Watch means there is a potential for flooding based on
current forecasts.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible
flood warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be
prepared to take action should flooding develop.
